PhD Application Process

For UK and EU applicants

All applications for admission to study for a PhD degree should initially be made through the Board of Graduate Studies from whom an application package, including application forms and Graduate Studies Prospectus, can be obtained via http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/. Completed application forms should be sent to: Dr Rosie Ward, Academic Secretary, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QZ, UK. Applications MUST be made using the forms, either online or on paper. Any offer will contain details of the conditions that need to be met before your admission can be confirmed.

The Department's research activities are found in the Research Profile booklet and details of some of the studentships available will be advertised here during the course of the year. It is always helpful if you can indicate your areas of interest on the application form and you are welcome to contact individual members of the academic staff about potential research projects.

Financial support from EC and UK funding organisations is available to a limited number of eligible candidates. However, the Department is not able to support all proposed research projects and you should let us know if you have taken steps to obtain funding from other sources.

If you have any queries about the application process or projects available in the Department please contact Dr Rosie Ward, Academic Secretary, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QZ, UK. Tel +44 1223 331955, Fax +44 1223 762088, email: remw2@msm.cam.ac.uk

For Overseas Applicants

It is always helpful if you can indicate your areas of interest on the application form and you are welcome to contact individual members of the academic staff about potential research projects.

The Department has only very limited funds available to support overseas students. It is therefore very important that you let us know how your proposed research project will be funded. Details of the level of support required and of the scholarships and awards that may be available from some of the Colleges are in the Graduate Studies prospectus. Please note that the closing date for applications for these awards is often many months before the beginning of the academic year.
