The SeeK workshop on materials includes the following activities: Solids, Liquids, Gases involves a simple explanation of the differences in the behaviour and arrangements of atoms in solids, liquids, and gases, and how smells diffuse through the air around us. This is illustrated by making the children act as atoms within different size areas marked out on the floor. Materials Detectives involves investigation of the properties of a number of materials. The information recorded is used to solve a crime by pinpointing the suspect. Plastic Magic is an activity to demonstrate the behaviour of plastics. Each child can decorate their own plastic cup which is then made into a badge. Cool Nitrogen is a demonstration about change of temperature and change of state in materials. Liquid nitrogen is used to illustrate these concepts. (Note: Liquid nitrogen is handled only by the SeeK team.) |
