Critical current goniometer

Our critical current goniometer system uses a purpose-built probe and software to measure critical current and n value as a function of rotation angle around two axes in external fields up to 0.6 T. A high current capability of around 200 A allows high-performance, full-width commercial conductors to be tested in all orientations even at low applied fields.

This technique is extremely valuable for characterising the anisotropy of high temperature superconductors and their pinning structures, both for gaining scientific understanding of the behaviour of materials and as a method for conductor optimisation. It also allows the performance of a conductor to be assessed in the context of its operating environment for applications, to aid with design validation and materials qualification. Measurements on commercial YBCO and BSCCO conductors in liquid nitrogen are currently in progress.
