2011: Centenary of Superconductivity

In 2011 we mark the 100th anniversary of the discovery of superconductivity by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes on 8 April 1911.

DVD Lectures on Superconductivity

SCENET-2 (the European Network for Superconductivity), funded by the European Commission, was involved in transferring know-how between academia and industry, and developing an advanced education and training programme. As part of this effort, Bartek Glowacki has developed a series of video lectures on superconductivity to transfer knowledge from established experts to university students and other audiences (as announced on page 7 of SCENET Newsletter N.1/02). These video lectures have been made available online and distributed on DVD at superconductivity schools and international conferences including EUCAS '09.

Public Lectures

On the 20th October 2010, Bartek Glowacki delivered a talk entitled Minimising energy usage by alternate use of superconducting materials to the Cambridge Network, a community of universities and high technology businesses in Cambridge. A video of the presentation, synchronised with the accompanying slides, is available for streaming online.

On the 8th January 2008, Bartek Glowacki delivered an extremely well-received presentation to the Peterborough Joint Panel. The Peterborough Joint Panel, formed in 1973, represents approximately 1,200 members of the Institutions of Mechanical Engineering (ImechE), Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), in Greater Peterborough and the surrounding areas. E-learning and Teaching Resources

A pilot project entitled "Saved by the Bell" to develop a library of interactive electronic teaching and learning resources on the subject of magnetism and electromagnetism received funding and support from CARET, the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies. Calculation, simulation and animation were combined to provide a greater insight into physical problems.

Dr. Bartek Glowacki has contributed an overview of superconductivity and superconductors to the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology.

The Goldsmiths' Company's Science for Society Courses

Science for Society courses provide science teachers with free residential courses, aimed at broadening their perspective on subjects allied to the A-level syllabus. Each course examines areas of direct or related interest to science modules within the National Curriculum. Dr. Bartek Glowacki will discuss superconductivity and its applications in the materials science course being held on 17-22 July 2005.
