Infra-red melting and densification

High-temperature localised melting in vacuo can be performed using infra-red systems designed in the group. High-intensity lamps are focussed at a point on a sealed, evacuated glass tube containing a sample. The tube can be rotated or moved using stepper motors during processing, allowing regions of the sample to be selectively melted and resolidified during processing. Two geometries are available - a vertical system, for densification of fibres, and a horizontal system for coated conductors.
