Microstructural change in high-temperature heat-affected zone of low-carbon weldable 13% Cr martensitic stainless steels

Abstract

The microstructures that develop in the high temperature heat-affected zone (HT-HAZ) of single-pass tungsten inert gas welded plates of two different low carbon martensitic stainless steels have been investigated using optical microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Particular attention has been given to the presence of delta-ferrite in the HT-HAZ. The region containing delta-ferrite was found to be larger in the HAZ of the highest alloyed steel. Evidence of former Widmanstatten austenite structure was found in the weld metal and in the grain coarsened heat-affected zone of the highest alloyed steel.
