Abstract

We report here a simple experiment which demonstrates that the crystallographic texture in a steel plate greatly influences the development of the solidification microstructure produced during welding. Beads of weld metal were deposited on three orthogonal faces of a cube of steel. The columnar austenite grains of austenite were found to be different in size and shape, as a function of the face on which the weld was deposited.
