The Goldsmiths' Company's Science for Society Courses: Materials Science

What is The Goldsmiths' Company?

The Goldsmiths' Company is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London. It has been responsible for hallmarking since 1300 and, today, operates the London Assay Office and supports the craft and industry of silversmithing and precious metal jewellery.

The Goldsmiths' Company's Science for Society Courses

Science for Society Courses provide science teachers with free residential courses, aimed at broadening their perspective on subjects allied to the A-level syllabus. Each course examines areas of direct or related interest to science modules within the National Curriculum. There is no charge for food, accommodation or tuition. The next course will run from 15 to 20 July 2012.

Materials Science Course

Based at the University of Cambridge and aimed primarily at teachers of chemistry or physics, this course provides insights into the broad field of materials, spanning the physical sciences, engineering and biomedicine. Subjects as diverse as structural materials, electronic devices, artificial bones and environmental degradation are covered by means of lectures, hands-on practical sessions and a visit to Duxford (focusing on aircraft materials used in aircraft).
