The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge has obtained the highest rating for Materials Science research, according to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise Quality Profile. Its contribution in the development of seminal concepts in ferrous metallurgy has been essential. The position of the Deparment is unique in conceiving novel high perfrmance alloys on demand by society.

The SKF-Cambridge parnership aims to supply the necessary knowledge for conceiving the next generation of bearing steels. New modelling approaches are being developed and trialled as it strives to achieve this aim. State of the art characterisation techniques will be utilised in order to understand such new materials.
