5 December 2025
We are pleased to announce that Dr Matthew Cliffe will be joining the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy on 5 January 2026 as an Associate Professor.
Matthew’s research focuses on exploring metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as quantum materials, developing methods to control and characterise disorder in MOFs to generate new and unusual magnetic and electronic behaviour.
He received his DPhil at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Goodwin, working on the characterization of disordered framework materials. He then took up a Research Fellowship at Sidney Sussex College, where he worked with Prof. Clare Grey in the Department of Chemistry, before moving to the University of Nottingham in 2018 as the inaugural Hobday Fellow. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2021 and Associate Professor in 2023.
Matthew will also serve as co-Director of the MPhil in Micro and Nanotechnology Enterprise, alongside Director Prof. Cate Ducati.
We look forward to welcoming Matthew to the Department and to the exciting contributions he will bring to our research and teaching programmes.
