The Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy is saddened to announce the passing of David Brandon, Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Materials Engineering at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. As a research student and later a staff scientist in Cambridge between 1955 and 1965, he shaped the early development of thin-film electron microscopy of metals and alloys, working with leading groups in the Department and the Cavendish Laboratory. He was part of a remarkable generation of young researchers in electron microscopy in Cambridge including Peter Hirsch (1925 – 2025) and Jack Nutting (1924 – 1988). Professor Brandon later described this decade in Cambridge as “life-changing”, and it remains an important chapter in the Department’s scientific heritage. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.
