Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy joins the founding lab network of CuspAI’s AI Materials Foundry

27 October 2026

The University of Cambridge is part of the founding lab network of the AI Materials Foundry, a global network launched by Cambridge-based start-up CuspAI to accelerate the discovery and design of next-generation materials. The Foundry brings together a global network of data, experimental laboratories, advanced computing and scientific expertise to support end-to-end materials discovery, from AI-driven design and simulation through to synthesis planning and experimental validation.
Within the Department, the collaboration connects closely to the autonomous materials discovery, or “self-driving lab”, research led by Associate Professor Shijing Sun, whose group develops AI- and robotics-guided platforms for the design, synthesis and understanding of advanced functional materials. The Department’s expertise in high-throughput synthesis and advanced characterisation will help bridge computational predictions with experimental validation, creating continuous closed-loop workflows that accelerate the discovery of materials for semiconductors, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
Professor Sun said: “The Foundry provides an exciting opportunity to close the loop between AI and experiments, and for academic and industry researchers to work closely together to accelerate the discovery of technologically relevant materials.”
