Noel Rutter

Affiliated Lecturer

I am an affiliated lecturer in the Department, a role in which I undertake a range of undergraduate teaching and assessment activities. My “day job” is as Director of Admissions at Wolfson College, where I lead on both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. I also have roles as a college Tutor and as Director of Studies across Engineering and Natural Sciences triposes at Wolfson and beyond that I am DoS in Materials at Clare, Selwyn and Hughes Hall.

I was an undergraduate in Cambridge and did Part II Materials in the final year before it became a 4-year course. I also completed my PhD in the Department before leaving for Oak Ridge National Lab where I worked on a US Department of Energy project. After a short time as a post-doc in Cambridge I took up a job with a superconducting materials company in New York, before returning to the Department in a teaching-focussed academic role. I spent a decade as Director of Undergraduate Teaching in MSM before moving to Monash University, Melbourne to become Director of Teaching in Materials Engineering, where I oversaw a major curriculum review. I then returned to Cambridge in 2020.
