Dr Louise Hirst has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant entitled 'Gliding epitaxy for inorganic space-power sheets'.

Radiation tolerant, low mass photovoltaic systems are needed to power the next generation of space technologies. In this programme Louise and her team will develop ultra-thin (<100 nm) solar cells with quantum confined structure for high performance, alongside a novel gliding epitaxy approach to release crystalline films from their growth wafers, reducing costs and enabling hybrid device designs.
