Laser Cutting of Stents

A stent is a tube which is inserted into a human artery and then expanded by balloon angioplasty to act as a scaffold to maintain unimpeded blood flow. It is frequently made of stainless steel, or rubber-elastic shape-memory metal. The movie shows the use of a pulsed yttrium-aluminium-garnet (YAG) laser to neatly cut the tube into the required pattern, without leaving burrs.
