High temperature corrosion limits component life in a range of important industrial and commercial applications from the petrochemical industry to energy production and transport. In this course, the thermodynamics and principles behind high temperature gas phase corrosion of metals and alloys are presented.

This lecture course covers:

  • The thermodynamics and thermodynamic diagrams that govern high temperature corrosion.
  • The mechanisms of high temperature oxidation of pure metals.
  • The oxidation of important classes of alloys.
  • Measuring oxidation behaviour.
  • Sulphate assisted hot corrosion.
  • The effect of water vapour on hot corrosion of alloys.
