Project areas:
Evaluation and development of lifetime prediction methods for high temperature engine components with various emphases on:
- nonlinear material modelling
- crack initiation lifing
- crack growth modelling
Of special interest in the future are improved methods for crack growth analyses, e.g. based on finite-element analyses, for multiaxial fatigue and for addressing the interaction of low cycle and high cycle fatigue under elevated temperatures.
Period of placements: 10 weeks July to September, though could exceed 10 weeks if desired.
Accommodation arrangements: Apartment in village near Dahlewitz ~£400-650 per month or student room in Berlin ~£300-500 per month (limited assistance can be given to help find accommodation)
Travel costs: ~100 Euro (~£85) per month for Berlin all zones travel card
Financial support from hosts: 800 Euro (~£680) per month, 2000 Euro (~£1700) for 10-week stay for students who have completed the first two years of their studies by the start of the placement. Students with only one year of study will receive approx 500 Euro (~£425) per month, 1250 Euro (~£1065) for 10-week stay.

Rolls-Royce Deutschland (RRD) offers the complete service from development through production to in-service support for aircraft engines. RRD has a workforce of around 2,500, divided between its two sites: Dahlewitz near Berlin and Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. The current main engine programme is related to a family of aero engines with a thrust range of 14,000 to 23,0000lbf, aimed at both the regional aircraft market covering 60 to 130 seats, and at the long range business jet market. RRD is involved in a number of national and international research projects, among others focusing on improving life prediction methods for engine components under complex service loading conditions. The Dahlewitz site is located 10 miles south of Berlin, one of Europe’s largest cultural centres with a rich selection and impressive variety of attractions.
