On the 5th October 2020 we marked the beginning of the centenary year of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge.  The history of the Department can be traced back to the generous donation of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths that resulted in the opening of a laboratory dedicated to “the study of metallurgy” on 5th October 1920.  Here you will find a collection of items based on events and articles looking back at the history of the Department as well as to the future.

If you'd like to find out more about the Department and Materials Science research beyond these "100 Years..." pages, the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy's history was documented in 2005 by Dr Jim Charles and Prof Lindsay Greer in the book "Light Blue Materials" and you can see our official Department photos in our Alumni gallery.  You'll also find recordings of our Goldsmiths' Seminar Series on our Youtube channel covering a range of current Materials Science research themes from across the world-wide Materials Science community and our newsletter "Material Eyes" can be read online.
