The Department has been at the forefront of Materials Science and Metallurgy for over 70 years. This has been achieved by the outstanding quality of the students and the staff over this time and their access to excellent facilities. Current research focuses on some of society's key challenges, including the creation of the energy-efficient materials and technologies on which our sustainable global future will depend, and improving the design and engineering of medical materials.

In order to maintain its position the Department continues to seek financial support to improve its facilities and endow a Sir Alan Cottrell Professorship in perpetuity.  More information on the following funds are available via the menu on the left:

  • The Cottrell Appeal Fund - Patron: HRH The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex - to endow the Sir Alan Cottrell Professorship in perpetuity
  • Heycock Development Fund  - for general financial support for the Department with a priority given to future teaching and research activity.
  • Dave Duke Memorial Fund - now complete (Sept 2016) - in recognition of of the important part Dave played in the success of the Department during his time here.
