Overview

The Department has a long tradition of hosting outstanding individuals who wish to establish an independent research career through externally-funded fellowships.

The Department is able to host research fellowships awarded by external funders which are intended for outstanding post-doctoral researchers seeking to pursue an academic career. These include:

Junior Research Fellowships (Cambridge Colleges)*
EPSRC Early Career Fellowship
Royal Society University Research Fellowship
Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship
Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Science
Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellowship
Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship
European Research Council Starting Grants
Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships
Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship**

All potential fellowship applications must first go through an internal assessment led by the Head of Department. This allows us to make an initial assessment of the suitability of your application with regards to the Department's research strategy and facilities. The Department will only consider hosting individuals with a proven research track record at a post-doctoral level, and must be able to demonstrate ambition and drive to set up an independent academic research career. Please direct enquiries to the Head of Department, but please note that we would normally expect that prior informal contact had been made with an academic staff member of the Department working in a relevant area.

Current Departmental researchers can find further information on the intranet.

*The University's Reporter is usually where JRF calls are published. See: http://www.reporter.admin.cam.ac.uk/. Different criteria are applied by different Colleges. Some support early stage researchers, others later stages, so make sure you fully check the detail and also that the JRF is stipendary. On the whole they are open calls for applications and you need not be a member of the specific College. However, before applying, candidates are encouraged to make contact with relevant Department academic staff of to informally discuss potential hosting options.
